SkyShowtime Original Series Las Pelotaris 1926 will premiere exclusively on the service on 5 July

Las Pelotaris 1926, starring Claudia Salas, María de Nati and Zuria Vega, is created by Marc Cistaré and produced by The Mediapro Studio in collaboration with TelevisaUnivision

Las Pelotaris 1926 narrates the struggle of three Basque pelota players, who struggle to achieve their dreams by overcoming the limitations women faced in the 1920s, when men monopolized all societal power. Idoia, Itzi and Chelo are successful athletes who assume the consequences of breaking the mould in a world and sport where women are denied ambition and sexual freedom – creating a story of love, perseverance and power.

The series, produced by The Mediapro Studio in collaboration with TelevisaUnivision, is created by Marc Cistaré (Vis a Vis, El barco, La víctima número 8) and stars Claudia Salas, María de Nati and Zuria Vega, who play Idoia, Itzi and Chelo. The cast is completed by an international cast including: Spanish Alex Onieva, Krista Aroca, Eva Rubio, Jesús Castejón and Peter Vives; Argentinian David Chocarro; Mexican Marco de la O, Vicente Tamayo, Héctor Kotsifakis, Antonio Gaona and Eligio Menéndez; and Colombian actress Viviana Serna.

Las Pelotaris 1926 was filmed between Spain and Mexico, the two countries where Basque pelota became most relevant at the beginning of the last century. The filming in Spain took place in Madrid, Guadalajara, and the Basque Country. Among other places, it was filmed at the Hotel Londres and La Concha Beach in San Sebastian, as well as at the Plaza Berri fronton court in Biarritz, and in the streets of different Basque towns such as Artikutza and Pasaia. The most outstanding locations in Mexico include the iconic Zócalo, the modernist Gran Hotel Ciudad de México, places like the magical town of Tepoztlán and the paradisiacal enclave of Las Estacas.

The series is inspired by the first female Basque pelota players, who challenged the prevailing social conventions of the 1920s. It is a story about independent women, ahead of their time, who confronted a male-dominated society and laid the foundation of women's sports. The three protagonists break many stereotypes, both professionally and personally, and experience situations in which drama is combined with elements of adventure and thriller in parts with no shortage of gangsters, corrupt policemen, hired thugs and unscrupulous businessmen.
